Fans want more, his coaches want Moor

Here’s the initial entry--call it a basketball diary--from Aalim Moor, a junior at St. Mary’s High in Berkeley. He’ll provide updates throughout the season as the Panthers attempt to both better its record of last season and go further in the state playoffs.

Aalim Moor plays for Manny Nodar, coach of St. Mary’s High, the defending Bay Shore Athletic league champion and a team that went 29-5 overall last season, including 12-0 in league play. This season, St. Mary’s is undefeated, off to a 7-0 start.

"We just finished the Luis A. Scattini Memorial Tournament at Palma High School yesterday. We played Palma in the championship game and beat them 73 to 49. I had a solid game as I finished with 4 points, 5 steals, 6 rebounds, 9 assists and 2 turnovers.

I was really proud of the way I played on defense the most, that was my best contribution to the team this tournament. I really frustrated their point guard, who is the best player on their team and I took him out of his game early which effected the rest of their team. My cousins Will and Chris Brew and I really pride ourselves on shutting down the other teams’ guards defensively--it fires us up.

Overall, I think I played well although some people have been saying they want me to score more points. I hear them and trust me, at some point, I will get mine, but only when it makes sense for our team.

My coaches have told me to keep doing what I’m doing--they are happy with what I’m giving to the team, my teammates are happy and we are beating teams by an average of 25 points a game. We are 7-0 and I made the All Tournament team...I’m good with that! I watched Jason Kidd be the best player on the Dream Team this summer putting up the same kind of stats and he is who I pattern my game after the most right now. I am the waiter and my job is to serve and feed my teammates and let them eat first, I’ll eat later when I’m relaxed and hungry."

Besides Moor, St. Mary’s has senior guard Chris Brew, junior guard Will Brew--aka The Brewery--forwards Justin Shields and Marcus Simien, plus some much needed size on the frontline in Demetrius and Domonique Lee, both sophomores.

In the rout of Palma High, Chris Brew scored 18 points with brother Will notching 11. Domonique Lee contributed 14 points. Palma actually led after the initial quarter but was outscored 22-6 in the next eight minutes.

These two teams met last March in the same gymnasium with St. Mary’s winning 58-53 in the NorCal quarterfinals.

Four St. Mary’s players earned all-tournament status: Will Brew was named the most valuable player, along with all tourney honors going to Chris Brew, Domonique Lee and Moor.
