I'm sorry--I fail to understand how "Watch me get flailed to death" translates into "love thy neighbor." The movie was not good film-making--it did not convey a message in the slightest, had no character development, assumed too much of its audience, and used melodrama and emotional response as a replacement for acting and camera work. Considering how little is actually known about Jesus the film made a large amount of speculation claiming to be researched fact.
This film was not about creating a better understanding of Jesus for the world. It wasn't even to help people grasp the last hours of Christ's life. It is a tool. A device to assure what people already believe in. This movie had nothing to do with Christ's message. If it did it would have contained the Sermon on the Mound or other "important moments in Christ's known life." Instead Mel Gibson focuses on gore and melodrama.
