What's so hard to understand about the message? "watch me get flailed to death" translates to Jesus taking the punishment we deserve, dying in our place. Even if you don't get the philosophy, the stated belief is clear.
And you're trying to say we don't know much about Jesus??? I don't follow you. The Gospels alone account for tons of information, especially on his character and words. What do you want, a dvd reality show starring Jesus?
