'Tis a sad day today...
Assmonkey won again.
For me, it's hard. I've always been proud to be an American - not because of the way our people act, or our government, but, because of all the concepts with which this country of ours was founded. Freedom. Justice. Equality. That kind of thing.
But, for the second time in a row, our country has elected another neo-conservative to power. Right-wing authoritarian who feels divinely inspired. The people of this country have, essentially, stated that they want this country to be a fundamentalist religious country and to hell with the consequences. Nevermind the fact that, day by day, week by week, month by month, our freedoms are being curtailed in the way of self-righteous christian morality. Nevermind the blatant union of big business and government. Nevermind the thousands of dead people the world over as a result of our arrogant, aggressive actions.
And I am ashamed.
I've been ashamed before, but only to a very small degree. Mostly when thinking about past actions my forefathers participated in that were gravely wrong. But, I had no control over those. I didn't KNOW them. I could do nothing to stop it. Those weren't /my/ people. They were cave men.
But now it's different. Now I'm genuinely ashamed. These are my people. I tried to stop it. I do know them. And they do something assinine again.
And there isn't a thing I can do about it.
Up until now, I was planning to go back to school and work on my masters in computer science. Now my only plans are to leave as soon as I can. This isn't my country anymore. It's been usurped by the fearful soccer mom and TV evangelist.
And I am sad.
