By no means do I think that this is a racist or homophobic comic. Now maybe I'm just creating this strange interpretation on what it is, but it's a piece on culture and social idiosyncracies. The stick(or piece of firewood) and cigarrete represent the British versions of 'faggot'. Of course in the US that has a completely different meaning. 'Faggot' didn't become a homosexual until the US witch trials, where homosexuals were thrown upon the fires that cleansed the witches. At this point the term became a slang term for homosexuals. The comic plays on all three of those definitions, but is in no means homophobic. At least no more homophobic, then let's say Bokeem Daishiki saying that "Green decks have homosexual tendencies."
I think a stick and a smoke calling each other faggots is down right hilarious, not that I'd repeat the joke in public, or let's say wear a shirt with it printed on it. But in no means is it meant to be an attack on the gay community. It's an attack on our social interpretations of the word 'faggot'.
