Allen still single
Eureka High’s Greg Allen was all set to head to Moscow, Idaho next season and play for the Vandals. The official paperwork, a national letter-of-intent, was to be signed in mid-November and the deal would be sealed. That didn’t happen. The 6-foot-2 guard had a change of heart and has reopened his recruiting.
Greg Allen may or may not become a Vandal
That’s because Allen got to thinking about his decision prior to last month’s November 12-19 signing period and concluded it was made in haste. "I felt rushed to commit," Allen said. "It’s not about Idaho, it’s that I wanted to wait until later and see what was available. Idaho is still in my choices because it’s a great school with great people and I think I could help them win but I want to wait my options out."
The next signing period begins April 15, 2009.
Football season has concluded with Allen making 51 catches as a wide receiver for 1,049 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushing for 137 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. After being named the Humboldt - Del Note - Big 5 most valuable offensive player as a wide receiver, Allen is now back on the hardwood.
"I’m kicking real good right now," Waid offered. "I’m best at field goals, then punting and kickoffs."
Allen decided to wait and see what offers the spring signing period will bring
The long, lean and athletic backcourter, who can play both the one and two positions in the backcourt, has statistically demonstrated improvement every high school season so far. As a sophomore, he totaled 450 points. It was 600 as a junior (20.8 a game), along with 6.3 rebounds and 5.4 assists a contest and 57 steals.
As of mid-December this season, the 6-foot-2 senior was averaging 26.8 points a game as well 7.3 boards, 4.8 assists and 2.7 steals each time out. He put up 40 points along with totaling 10 assists in a recent tournament consolation game.
"I’rsquo;m looking for a good team that I can make better," Allen said. "It doesn’t matter to me where the school is located. It wouldn’t matter to me what position I play in college. It’s whatever helps the team the best. I see myself as a great shooter and leader."
A friend is helping put together game film of Allen and the plan is to send it out to as many schools as possible.
According the the NCAA basketball recruiting calendar, October 6, 2008 through March 31, 2009 is an evaluation period, with a couple of brief exceptions. It won’t be difficult to pick out the college recruiters traveling to Eureka along Highway 101. In their rental cars and in the Eureka High gymnasium, they will be sporting a mixture of small insignias and big block letters announcing their employers on their shirts. The car and foot traffic could get heavy if Allen keeps producing and improving as he has so far throughout his high school days.
