Club Preview: E-Times Hoops
Coach Ernest Taubodo runs the E-Time Hoops Academy, a club team program based in Antelope, just outside of Sacramento. E-Time Hoops stands out for two perennial achievements: on-court basketball competitiveness and a roster full of student-athletes who also win in the classroom.
For all the sordid stories about club team hoops appearing in the media, E-Time Hoops is the antidote. For any doubters, read on.
Here are the 'outcomes' for the players on the top 2010 E-Time squad:
- JT Adenrele - will attend UC Davis on scholarship and major in engineering
- Devin Crisosto - Feather River College
- Jonathan Davis - Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo majoring in biomedical engineering
- Robert Duncan - The Air Force Academy prep school in preparation for joining the Air Force Academy in August, 2012
- Joe Eyen - Pomona-Pitzer College
- James Geyer - Will attend Cal and major in business/pre-law
- Chad Haysbert - Houston Baptist College on scholarship and major in business
- Devin Murphy - Sierra College
- Daniel Smith - Cal-State East Bay and major in business/fashion
That's a hard-to-match, let alone exceed, rate of success. Plus, the majors certainly meet any standards for predicting post-college employment.
As for this spring and summer, Taubodo has individuals to watch:
- Gabe Bealer, 6-foot-4, Antelope High (formerly at Jesuit High), 2013 - Bealer defines the term 'live body' as his speed and quick jumping prowess are of top-of-the-chart quality. With added strength and continued skill development, he'll be quite the handful for any individual defender. Bealer was brought up from the Jesuit High junior varsity squad late in the 2010-11 season and now is enrolled at Antelope High. Taubodo describes him as "quite a talent and a top student."
- Myles Hunter, 6-foot, Center High, 2012 - Hunter is the starting point for Center High and Taubodo says he "is a perimeter scorer who has the potential to be a D-2 guard if he improves his strength and explosiveness to the basket." Hunter tallied seven three-pointers in a league game earlier this season.
- Mitesh Patel, 5-foot-10, Christian Brothers, 2012 - One of those high basketball IQ backcourters, Taubodo describes Patel as "a pass first guard who values the ball and dictates the tempo for his offense. He needs to improve on shooting the ball consistently but has a tremendous work ethic --."Mitesh works out seven days a week with various coaches for skill fundamentals, strength and conditioning training."
- Judd Sailsbery, 6-foot-0, Orland High, 2013 - Sailsbery averaged just under 14 points a game as a sophomore and totaled 36 points, including six three-pointers, in a March playoff win against Modesto Christian. Taubodo's assessment: "An incredible player, with a great handle and unlimited range, who is a leader on the court and in the classroom."
- Chris Smith, 6-foot-3, Center High, 2012 - A First Team Pioneer Valley League honoree, Smith averaged over 14 points a game this past season for Center High and, according to Taubodo, he is "leading ETH is scoring this spring." There is definitely a basketball jones gene in the family as amply demonstrated by Smith's father and older brother previously playing hoops at Sacramento State.
- Jarvis Watkins, 6-foot-2, Antelope High, 2012 - A First Team Capital Athletic League selection, Watkins is the ultimate athlete as he also participates in football and track. Here's Douglas Benton and Steve Hu of Nor Cal Preps describing the senior-to-be after viewing him in a March 2 game versus Woodcreek: "'He is dangerous when isolated and driving to the rim, but can keep defenses honest with his passing. Antelope head coach Robert Richards said Watkins is a complete player who can rebound, defense, get by the defense and also isn't afraid to pass the ball for a better look..."
This is a group and program even the most ardent opponent can appreciate.
